Information For Dues Change Proposal

Current Situation: Dues are collected for us (AU) and our parent unions (NYSUT & AFT). Adjuncts United dues have remained constant at $35/year, or $17.50 per semester for the 6 years we have collected dues. We collect dues out of 7 paychecks each semester, so this works out to $2.50 each paycheck. Both NYSUT & AFT have graduated dues scales, with the lowest category currently being under $8,000/year. This year, someone earning under $8,000/year paid $4.99 per paycheck to NYSUT & AFT. So the total dues from each paycheck for someone in the lowest bracket was $7.49.

Problem: Some of our members are paid extremely little. These people usually fall into one of two categories. Some teach hourly music lessons and others might teach 1-2 credits of exercise classes. A bi-weekly net pay could be under $100. If we then take $2.50 out of it for us (plus NYSUT & AFT dues) that is a large percentage of their meager take-home pay. We cannot control NYSUT or AFT dues, but we do control our own dues. But if we reduce dues for a significant number of our payers we would need to increase them for other members, so we continue to have money to pay our bills, etc. Any proposal should be approximately revenue neutral.

Proposal: (1) Establish a modified sliding scale for AU dues. Create a new dues category set at 95% of the minimum pay for a 3-credit course (rounded to the nearest $100). This is a level where someone teaching a 3-credit course at the minimum per credit rate would fall above the threshold. Someone would have to teach fewer than 3 class credits or give a few hourly music lessons in an academic year to fall into this category.

(2) Reduce AU dues for this new category to $7/year (50¢/paycheck). This would reduce their total deduction per paycheck this year to $5.49, a significant difference.

(3) Increase AU dues for payers in the top 2 NYSUT dues categories by $15 to $50/year. Currently this would include anyone earning more than $24,000/year. The effect would be to increase the amount taken from each paycheck by about $1.07. The new AU dues schedule next year would become:

Yearly Income Range………Yearly AU dues……..AU deduction per paycheck
Under $3,300…………………………$7…………………………….50¢
$3,300 - $23,999……………………$35………………………….$2.50
$24,000 and over……………………$50………………………….$3.57

Note that this is not the total dues schedule, which includes NYSUT & AFT dues also.

(4) Allow the new category in (1) above to adjust automatically each year, and allow the categories in (3) to adjust as the NYSUT & AFT categories change.
